化学系是于2001年7月由原山西大学师范学院化学系、太原师范专科学校化学系和山西省教育学院化学系合并而成的。现有教职工46人,专职教师34人,其中教授9人,副教授14人。高级职称的教师占教师总数的67.6%。博士(含在读)13人,硕士14人。高学历教师占到教师总数的79.4%。
化学系于1998年9月开始招收的化学专业(师范类)全日制普高本科生,于2004年起招收应用化学专业(非师范),2014年获批“化学教学论”专业硕士点,2015年开始招收硕士研究生。现在校本科生760名,17个教学班。
化学学科2014年被评为校级重点学科。
化学实验室面积8000余平方米,总资产 848.3 万元, 10万元以上大型精密仪器19台件(其中进口13台),价值475万元。化学系教师近几年来主持的省部级以上科研项目30余项,其中国家自然基金2项。授权发明专利8项,SCI收录和国家级论文百余篇,出版教材9部。省级精品共享课1门。获得山西省技术发明一等奖1项,省级教学成果一等奖1项、二等奖1项。
